In this post, we present a brief overview of our recently published book chapter titled “Spectroscopic Methods for Analysing Herbal Medicine and their Roles in Healthcare”
Spectroscopic methods play a pivotal role in various aspects of herbal medicine research and development, including –
Authentication and Adulteration Detection: Spectroscopic methods are frequently employed to identify adulterants and verify the authenticity of herbal remedies. For instance, using their molecular fingerprints, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy can distinguish between genuine and counterfeit herbal goods at the same time.
Quality Control and Standardisation: The quality and safety of herbal medications are ensured using spectroscopic techniques, which make it possible to quantify active substances and identify impurities. Methods like Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are especially helpful for creating standardised procedures for herbal compositions.
Phytochemical Profiling: Spectroscopic techniques ensure the quality and safety of herbal medications by facilitating the measurement of active substances and the identification of impurities. Methods like LC-MS and NMR are helpful for creating standardised procedures for herbal compositions.
NMR and MS-based techniques have important roles in pharmacokinetic and metabolomic studies. They provide useful information on the drugs’ absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) and can be used to study the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of herbal remedies.
Mechanistic Studies: By clarifying how bioactive chemicals interact with biological targets, spectroscopic techniques help us understand the mechanisms of action of herbal medicines.
Spectroscopic methods are essential to healthcare because they guarantee the effectiveness, safety, and purity of herbal remedies. These methods enable the identification of active ingredients, the standardisation of formulations, and the detection of contaminants. Spectroscopy supports evidence-based medicine by providing insight into the chemical composition of herbal products, which aids in the integration of herbal medicines into traditional healthcare. Additionally, the identification of novel bioactive compounds using spectroscopic analysis promotes the development of novel drugs and therapies.
